In mid-April, WVU students were given the opportunity to participate in an international, multi-agency cyber competition, Locked Shields. This out-of-classroom exercise enables students to use the skills they’ve learned in everything from engineering to cybersecurity, media and law in one of the most complex, technical, live-fire challenges in the world.

For Billy Cawthorne, WVU has always been at the forefront of family time. A Milford, Michigan, native, Cawthorne will be graduating in May with a degree in mechanical engineering from the Statler College.

From meeting in the military and falling in love, to going back to school together at WVU after serving over two decades in the United States Navy, Stacy and Blane Fike have always been there for each other.

Coming from a family where both parents were engineers heavily influenced her interest in the field. Yet it wasn’t until she attended an Engineering in Action camp as a junior in high school hosted by the Statler College that solidified her interest in pursuing a career in engineering.

While at WVU, Foundation Scholar Miriam Demasi was drawn to the idea of intersecting technology and humanity. As a computer and electrical engineering major, she was a sister in Alpha Omega Epsilon, a professional sorority for women in engineering and technical sciences.

Pedro Mago, Glen H. Hiner Dean of the Statler College, has announced the recipients of the College’s inaugural Thriving Women Program grants, intended to empower female faculty and staff to advance in their professional careers through individual or community transformation.

This issue of EngineeringWV Wired highlights a great example of the multiple experiential learning opportunities our computer science and cybersecurity students have in our College. I invite you to read about some of our outstanding students graduating this semester and a new initiative implemented in the College to support our female faculty and staff in advancing their professional careers. I am proud of our faculty and student achievements and their dedication and passion for the College.
