More than 50 years after scientists first coined the term "hydrogen economy," the movement to make hydrogen a predominant global fuel source could be gaining traction, thanks to research led by one West Virginia University engineer.

Robin Hissam, teaching associate professor in the Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources has been appointed to associate dean of academics and student performance, effective July 1, 2022.

The Statler College led bridge system has progressed from mere concept to widespread commercial implementation. Karl Barth associate professor in the Wadsworth Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, alongside Marshall University Associate Professor Greg Michaelson, have conducted extensive experimental testing to develop the press-brake-formed tub girder bridge system in conjunction with the Short Span Steel Bridge Alliance.

Professionals from institutions across the nation worked together at WVU to understand and improve issues NASA is facing in creating autonomous systems using artificial intelligence on spacecraft systems.

Ashish Nimbarte, professor of industrial engineering at WVU, has been named chair of the department, effective July 1, 2022.

Blurry, low-resolution images from security cameras or drones can throw hurdles at the efforts of law enforcement and military. This is where one WVU engineer hopes to paint a clearer picture by developing robust face recognition software algorithms capable of accurately identifying individuals at distances as far as 300 meters, or nearly 1,000 feet.

Applications are currently open for recent graduates and working professionals looking to pursue a newly launched Master of Science in Engineering Management from the Department of Industrial Management and Systems Engineering in WVU’s Statler College.

Lizzie Santiago, teaching professor in the fundamentals of engineering program, has been named director of the program, effective July 1, 2022.

Dear friends and colleagues,
I hope you are having a wonderful summer. We continue to be proud of the hard work and dedication of our students, faculty and staff in the College. This issue of EngineeringWV Wired highlights the research, the outstanding accomplishments of some of our faculty and announces new leadership in the College. Robin Hissam has been named associate dean of academics and student performance, Ashish Nimbarte has been named chair of the Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering and Lizzie Santiago has been named director of the fundamentals of engineering program. Congratulations to all of them, and I look forward to exciting years ahead.
As Engineering Challenge camps continue throughout the summer, I encourage you to see what our future engineers are doing on our social media channels @wvustatler. All of the activity happening right now with our camps is creating excitement for the amazing year to come when our students arrive back on campus in a few short weeks.
