Graduate student Negar Farhang Doost, undergraduate students Christopher Smith and Emma Walker, and Soumya Srivastava, WVU Banjamin M. Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources assistant professor, conduct research on tick-borne disease testing in Srivastava’s lab. The project received a $1.2 million grant from the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health.
A team led by a Statler College biomedical engineer is working to ramp up and reimagine how medical professionals diagnose tick-borne infections such as Lyme disease. Assistant Professor Soumya Srivastava is developing a tool that detects tick-borne diseases via a blood sample on a single chip within one to two weeks after the onset of an infection, whereas existing approaches rely on a symptom-based questionnaire and tests that aren’t reliable until at least a few weeks after infection.

Statler College engineers aim to improve safety with autonomous robotic inspection system for coal waste storage facilities

Researchers Guilherme Pereira and Ihsan Berk Tulu were awarded nearly $500,000 to develop an aerial robot-enabled inspection and monitoring system for abandoned coal waste storage facilities. The goal of the project is to find a way to detect leakages and failures at coal waste facilities before tailings and coal ash are released into the environment.

Dear friends and colleagues,

As we reach the mid-point of the semester, it is clear that our faculty, staff, and students have shown tremendous dedication to their teaching and research, as demonstrated by the abundance of articles above.

This issue of EngineeringWV highlights our College's dedication to interdisciplinary research and innovation, as we announced over $3.5 million in funding for various research projects in the last month alone. In addition, our research expenditures and awards continue to increase, and this success is a direct result of the dedicated efforts and hard work of our faculty, students, and staff. I am also pleased to announce the inaugural cohort of the new Dean's Leadership Fellows Program. Furthermore, I would like to congratulate our team of civil and environmental engineering graduate students who won third place at the Visualization, Information Modeling, and Simulation competition.

Members of the Statler College community are relentless in their pursuit of excellence. I am inspired by the outstanding accomplishments of our students, faculty, and staff and proud of their achievements. I invite each of you to join me in celebrating all that we have accomplished thus far and all that we will achieve in the future.
