WVU F1Tenth team places second in international competition

When the objective is to build and program a 1:10 scaled race car, minimize laptime, race head-to-head, and cross the finish line without crashing, one might think it’s simple, right? Not when it has to be completed autonomously.  As first-time participants of the F1Tenth competition, the West Virginia University  team, based at the Statler College, stepped up and did just that — placing second against teams from USA, Canada and China.

Dean's Message

Dear friends and colleagues,

As we navigate through the midpoint of this semester, growth is a central theme reflected in the accomplishments of our faculty, staff, students, and alumni.

In this issue of EngineeringWV Wired, we are excited to share the news about assistant professor Nima Karimian, from the Lane Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, who has been awarded $632,000 from the prestigious National Science Foundation CAREER Award. This marks the seventh NSF CAREER award received in the past three years, creating a notable list of prestigious recipients. We are incredibly proud of our faculty and the groundbreaking research they continue to pursue in our college.

We now have a new student competition team to add to our roster, and in their first time competing, they did a great job representing the college and university. Congratulations to the WVU F1Tenth team for their outstanding performance, securing second place during the 2024 IEEE International Conference on Smart Mobility in Niagara Falls, ON, Canada. Growth not only continues in experiential learning opportunities for our students but also in the classroom. Enrollment in our computer science and cybersecurity programs has increased 41% this academic year. In addition, the engineering technology program has seen a significant increase in enrollment, and to support this growth, the program was recently awarded a $1.1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to meet the demand for student capacity and create state-of-the-art laboratories.

We are deeply grateful for the support from our alumni, which comes in various forms, including their wisdom from their experiences. We appreciate the insights from chemical and biomedical engineering alumna Laurie Wiegand-Jackson, mining engineering alumnus Walter Scheller, and computer, biometric systems and electrical engineering alumna Kelly Faddis, among others. Their support and guidance are invaluable to our students as they navigate their professional paths.

I hope you enjoy all the beauty that fall offers in the Mountain State and your neighborhoods.

Let's Go!
