Dear Alumni, Colleagues, and Friends:
Greetings from the Industrial Management and Systems Engineering department. As the year draws to an end, I would like to share a few highlights from the IMSE’s 2024 journey.
The department faculty remained busy pursuing impactful research, with our research expenditures rising to an all-time high, and we were ranked 35th among the Industrial Engineering programs in the recent NSF Research Expenditures Rankings. Plus, the IMSE department saw a significant growth in the number of graduate students. The number of doctoral students increased by 3.5-fold, and the total number of graduate students increased by 1.5-fold. Our online graduate programs in Engineering Management, Safety Management and Occupational Safety and Health have been instrumental in providing continuing education opportunities, driving the upward trend in enrollment.
Over 80 students graduated from the IMSE department over the last academic year — nearly 50% with a BSIE degree. The job placement rate remained very high at 97%, with an average salary of $78K (range $65K to $110K) for the BSIE graduates. The BSIE students also had the highest number of internships and co-op experiences at Statler College.
We continued to provide our students with mentorship, professional development and experiential learning opportunities. Our new minor in Engineering Leadership will equip future engineers with the critical leadership skills necessary to thrive in a globalized and interconnected world. Our IISE student chapter spearheaded several student-centric activities and was recognized with the GOLD Award for its outstanding performance, service, and achievement for 2nd consecutive year.
As we move into the new year, I am excited about the new directions our faculty will explore to strengthen and enhance the department’s ongoing research in AI, ML, data analytics, and augmented reality applications as they tackle emerging engineering and sustainability challenges. We also look forward to expanding the department’s online offerings by developing newer certificates and micro-credentials. Additionally, our ongoing collaboration with the Chambers College of Business and Economics is expected to provide innovative learning opportunities to students, helping them learn and master the best of engineering and business.
Our students, faculty, alumni, and colleagues from the peer institutions have remained critical in the IMSE department’s growth and success. I want to take this opportunity to thank them all for their continued support!
Finally, I wish you all the very best and a happy, healthy, and safe holiday season. May the new year bring success, happiness, and fulfillment of your aspirations!
Warm regards,
