The Science, Technology & Research division of the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission awarded three research challenge grants worth approximately $1.3 million each to support research conducted by students and faculty at West Virginia High education institutions. Research team led by Xin Li, professor in the Lane Department, was selected for the award based on their project titled “Data Driven Autonomous Experiments for Energy Sciences Principles of Machine Learning.”

Clouds part for solar energy’s prospects in West Virginia as WVU and partners build a solar-power test site in Fairmont

Anurag Srivastava, professor and chair of the Lane Department, will support the construction and analysis of a “solar testbed” at the I-79 Technology Park in Fairmont. The testbed has been selected for a $2.3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, pending approval and finalization of award negotiations, with land donated by the High Technology Foundation and in collaboration with utility company First Energy.

Professor Xin Li, received $250,000 from the National Science Foundation to participate in a collaborative project aimed at dismantling opioid trafficking networks and enhancing public safety, health and welfare.

A recent report by the National Science Foundation ranked the WVU Benjamin M. Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources in the top 23 percent of engineering programs in the United States, coming in at 94 among 413 institutions.

Computer science and electrical engineering students received top placement honors in the second annual Statler College Graduate Student Research Symposium held in March.

Anurag Srivastava, Lane Department chair and professor was lead author on “Cyber Infrastructure for the Smart Electric Grid” recently published by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and Wiley.

Katerina Goseva-Popstojanova and Tom Devine were named Educators of the Year. Jeremy Dawson was named Outstanding Mentor of the Year. Kevin Bandura and Gianfranco Doretto recognized as Outstanding Researcher of the Year.

LCSEE alums received the best overall conference paper award at the 2022 IEEE Homeland Security Symposium

Kelsey O’Haire and Samuel Price, who both graduated with master’s degrees in May 2022, and Sobhan Soleymani who graduate with his Ph.D. in May 2021 received the best overall conference paper award for their research on face morphed images.

During the spring semester, we celebrated our outstanding students, faculty and staff through various recognition events. Please take a moment to explore this newsletter that showcase the remarkable achievements of the Lane Department.

As we head into the summer, we welcome longer days and blooming flowers. It's also an opportune time to re-evaluate and strategize our efforts for student success and interdisciplinary research programs in areas such as digital health, energy, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and biometrics. Our strategic focus remains on addressing society's most pressing challenges and we anticipate continued growth and impact.
