Supported by $505,784 from a National Science Foundation CAREER award, researcher Emily Garner has launched a five-year study to learn more about biofilms — conglomerations of fungi, algae, bacteria and other single-celled organisms that cling to each other and to surfaces like the insides of water pipes that bring drinking water to homes and businesses.

Dear friends and colleagues,

I hope you are having a wonderful summer. We have had a busy and productive month with many significant accomplishments from our faculty, students and alumni.

Emily Garner, Assistant Professor in the Wadsworth Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, has won the NSF CAREER award; QingQing Huang, Associate Professor of Mining Engineering, was named the Syd and Felicia Peng Professor of Mining Engineering; and Ashish Nimbarte, Chair of our Industrial and Management Systems Engineering Department, and his team won a grant from the EPA to help businesses boost productivity, go green with free waste assessments.

I am excited to share that we have launched a new degree program in environmental engineering that will provide more academic opportunities for our students in the college.

I look forward to celebrating more accomplishments with each of you next month!
