Supported by $400,000 in U.S. Department of Energy funding, researchers at WVU have taken the first steps toward developing technology that can capture carbon dioxide in the air and use it for eco-friendly manufacturing of methanol. The process they have begun modeling — which involves pulling air from buildings — could increase the sustainable supply of methanol, one of the world’s most extensively used raw materials, while removing a planet-warming greenhouse gas from the atmosphere.

Dear friends and colleagues,
The fall semester is in full swing. Our faculty and students have had many things to celebrate over the past month, and I'm proud of their hard work and all they have accomplished.
This issue of EngineeringWV Wired highlights some of the outstanding research, awards, and game-changing support to our college. Xingbo Liu, associate dean for research, has won a grant to develop technology that can capture carbon dioxide in the air and use it for eco-friendly manufacturing of methanol; Antero Resources and Antero Midstream generously contributed $4 million to expanding educational opportunities in petroleum and natural engineering and three of our students received Hazel Ruby McQuain Graduate Scholarships to continue graduate studies in their chosen field. I encourage you to read about our inaugural Engineering Boot Camp, where our team introduced STEM concepts and applications to K-5 teachers across the state to include in their curriculums.
We appreciate all of our alumni and friends, and I look forward to sharing more achievements of our students, faculty, and staff with each of you next month!
Let's Go!
