West Virginia University research is shining a light on the mysterious world of dark energy.  Scientists know dark energy makes up about 70% of the universe and is responsible for the universe’s accelerating expansion. Beyond that, little about it is certain, so WVU engineer Kevin Bandura is enhancing the calibration of radio telescopes that can tell astronomers about dark energy by measuring the “neutral hydrogen” in the universe, a simple form of hydrogen with no net electric charge.

Dean's Message

Dear friends and colleagues,

In this issue of EngineeringWV Wired, we are excited to recognize and celebrate our partnerships and unique collaborations.

We are pleased to announce that Kevin Bandura, associate professor in the Lane Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering, is designing radio telescope technology to help astronomers understand the expansion of the universe by measuring dark energy. Meanwhile, the Office of Engagement for Students, Faculty, and Staff, along with the WVU STEAM Technical Assistance Center, is exploring collaborative opportunities to provide hands-on STEAM learning experiences for K–12 students. These types of collaborations are supported by our loyal alumni, who recognize the importance of integrating STEM applications into local school systems and inspiring the next generation of engineers and computer scientists.

Support isn't limited to just our alumni. Our faculty are dedicated to creating initiatives to move our college forward while gaining leadership experience through our Dean's Leadership Fellows program, a unique opportunity for faculty to develop their leadership skills and contribute to the strategic direction of our college. Learn more about each faculty member and how their contributions will have a direct impact on our academics and research efforts.

We have many exciting events planned for next month, including Industry Day and the Mountain State Cyber Summit. Be sure to follow our social media channels @wvustatler and check out the next issue of EngineeringWV Wired to stay updated. I hope you are enjoying all the beauty that fall has to offer!
