SEPTEMBER 2022
WVU Lane Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering students Partha Sarker, Paroma Chatterjee and Jannatul Adan, discuss a power grid simulation project led by Anurag Srivastava, professor and department chair, in the GOLab.
The electrical grid faces a mounting barrage of threats that could trigger a butterfly effect – floods, superstorms, heat waves, cyberattacks, not to mention its own ballooning complexity and size – that the nation is unprepared to handle. With more than $1.3 million in combined funding, Anurag Srivastava and researchers are tackling two convergent studies aiming to transform power grid crisis response.

RESEARCH

The launch of WVU’s Small Satellite Center of Excellence will enable West Virginia to send its second SmallSat into space and holds the potential to jumpstart the aerospace industry statewide.

West Virginia aerospace industry set to take off with launch of WVU Small Satellite Center

West Virginia is now on its way toward launching the state’s second small satellite. A team from West Virginia University and the NASA West Virginia Space Grant Consortium is poised to turn that achievement into a massive boost for the aerospace industry statewide by taking the first steps toward opening the West Virginia Small Satellite Center of Excellence.

WVU engineers deploy robots to improve on-the-job safety for retail workers

For as long as robots have existed, the fear of machines ousting humans for their jobs has widely persisted. West Virginia University engineers are deploying robots to help workers keep their jobs — by saving them from potential slips, falls and workplace hazards. WVU Engineers have received $367,000 from the National Science Foundation for a study aimed at reducing falling risk in retail environments.

Statler College now utilizes fully centralized student advising center

With the transition to centralized student advising in the Benjamin M. Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources complete, students are able to access primary-role academic advisors 12 months out of the year from the Statler College Advising Center. The Advising Center serves students by answering questions on scheduling, career planning, next steps, extracurriculars, changes to a major or periodic check-ins to make sure students are on track to meet their academic goals.
