Dean's Message Fall 2023

Dean Pedro Mago

The Fall 2023 issue of Engineering West Virginia Magazine is finally here, and we couldn’t be more excited to share with you all what’s been happening here at Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources.

This issue’s feature, “Fostering Innovation in the Heart of Appalachia,” highlights the remarkable work and partnerships that are taking place at the Lane Innovation Hub. In its second year serving the WVU campuses and outside communities, the Lane Innovation Hub has already made incredible interdisciplinary collaborations possible, from a 3D-printed pediatric elbow used for medical instruction to manufacturing robotic parts to creating prototypes for small local businesses.

Speaking of interdisciplinary collaborations, it’s that type of teamwork that gave our robotics and mine rescue teams unbelievable success by clinching top positions in two prestigious international competitions: the 2023 University Rover Challenge and the Intercollegiate Mine Emergency Rescue Development competition. Their outstanding performances made them world champions and showcased their exceptional skills and dedication on the global stage.

From freshmen undergraduates to distinguished alumni, supporters and everyone in between, our college thrives because of your hard work and dedication to our success. While the future remains unwritten, our vision of creating a more secure, sustainable, and healthy world is what inspires us to keep pushing boundaries every day. As Mountaineers and engineers, we live up to that responsibility every day by generating innovative ideas through groundbreaking research, adapting to changes in the world, and educating future generations. We strive to leave things better than we found them, and as we look to the future, we remain committed to making a positive impact in the world.

We are excited to have you with us on this journey. Let’s go!
