Interdisciplinary graduate research to be presented at WVU

The research accomplishments of graduate engineering and science students will be on display Friday, October 9, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m., atWest Virginia University's Museum Education Center.

Students from WVU, Carnegie Mellon and Howard University will present their collaborative research projects as part of the Interdisciplinary Graduate Education and Research Traineeship program. The National Science Foundation's flagship interdisciplinary training program, IGERT builds upon the foundations of student's interdisciplinary knowledge through interdisciplinary training.

Students will highlight their ongoing research projects in two areas. Students from WVU will discuss their work in the area of nanotoxicology research and education while student from CMU and Howard will discuss the environmental effects and policy associated with nanotechnology through presentations and posters.

Students presenting from WVU include Reem Eldawud, chemical engineering; Ramon Beesley, physics; Amy Mihalchik, pharmacology and pharmaceutical sciences; Alixandra Wagner, chemical engineering; and Alaeddin Abukadb, physiology.

WVU is excited to host the event, according to Kimberly Quedado, program coordinator for WVU IGERT.

"The graduate fellows participating in these programs are some of the best students from the universities involved in the program," Quedado said. "Because of their synergistic overlap of focus in nanotechnology research, the fellows will have a unique opportunity to learn from one another through presentations and informal discussions. It will allow them to communicate different approaches to solving related research problems.

"Collaborations created from this event will have the potential to expand WVU's strength in nanotechnology research," Quedado added, noting the close proximity of the campuses could facilitate and sustain such relationships once developed."
