Liu named American Ceramic Society Fellow
Xingbo Liu, Statler Endowed Faculty Chair in Engineering at West Virginia University, has been named a Fellow of the American Ceramic Society. Liu, who has done extensive research in solving various energy problems through electrochemical applications including fuel cells, sensors and batteries, was highly recommended by the Panel of Fellows and the ACerS Board of Directors unanimously approved his selection.
The Fellow designation recognizes ACerS members who have distinguished themselves through outstanding contributions to the ceramic arts or sciences, broad and productive scholarship in ceramic science and technology, conspicuous achievement in ceramic industry or by outstanding service to the Society. Every year, ACerS elevates less than 0.2 percent of its members to the grade of Fellow. Liu will receive the award at the ACerS Honors and Awards Banquet at its 121st annual meeting on September 30, in Portland Oregon.
“I am honored and proud to be joining such an elite group of materials professionals,” said Liu.
A Fellow of ASM International, Liu has received numerous awards, such as the RD 100 Award (2011); the Minerals, Metals and Materials Society Early Career Faculty Fellow Award (2010); Brimacombe Medalist (2015); and the Statler College’s Researcher of the Year (2015, 2011), Outstanding Researcher awards (2015, 2011, 2009, 2008) and New Researcher of the Year (2005). He joined the faculty at WVU as a postdoctoral fellow in 2000, after earning his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in materials science and engineering from the University of Science and Technology, Beijing, China. After a national search, Liu was named the Statler Endowed Faculty Chair in Engineering in 2018.
He has served in various leadership positions outside WVU, including as chair of The Minerals, Metals Materials Society High Temperature Alloys Committee from 2011-2013 and its Energy Conversion and Storage Committee from 2012-2014. He served as chair (2015-2017) and currently is the counselor for the Basic Science Division of the American Ceramics Society.
Founded in 1898, the American Ceramic Society is the leading international professional membership organization for ceramic, glass and materials scientists, engineers, researchers, manufacturers, sales professionals, educators and students. ACerS publishes refereed journals, periodicals and books; organizes meetings and expositions; and offers technical information through web and print outlets. The Society serves more than 11,000 members from 70-plus countries.
