MEDIA ADVISORY: Statler College to host three Engineering Challenge Camps: Engineering in Healthcare and two Elementary Engineering Challenge Camps July 14-19

WHAT: The Statler College will host one high school Engineering Challenge Camp the week of July 14. Engineering in Healthcare is a camp designed to highlight how engineering principles are utilized within the healthcare industry from creating drug delivery systems to medical devices. Two elementary-level engineering camps, with the theme Story Laboratory, will also run that week. Campers entering 1st-3rd grade will attend in the morning and 4th-5th grade campers will attend in the afternoon. The 2019 theme, Story Laboratory, will use popular children’s books and focus on solving problems that the books’ characters face while using the engineering design process.

Engineering in Healthcare will host 29 campers from seven states; the Elementary Engineering Challenge camps will each host 30 campers from a total of three states.

The Engineering Challenge Camp series is co-sponsored by EQT and the Statler College, and in part by Halliburton, Assurant and Northeast Natural Energy.

Design project to assist quadriplegic to self-feed

Campers will create and build assistive devices to help a quadriplegic self-feed, which reflects a real-world design scenario.

Thursday, July 18, 2019 2:00-5:00 p.m., G3 Engineering Sciences Building/205 Mineral Resources Building

Helmet Build and Test

Working with Biomedical Engineering faculty member, Dr. Robin, Hissam, campers will create a device in order to limit the effect of an impact to the head. The campers will design, build and test a model helmet with sensors they create to measure various forces.

Hard Tissue Engineering

Campers will develop constructs with real-world constraints to serve as a support mimicking a bone that must be strong enough to hold a certain weight, but not so strong that it doesn’t flex or break under too heavy of a load.

Tuesday, July 16; 3:45-4:45 p.m., 109 Mineral Resources Building/Courtyard between MRB and ESB

Tie Dye Quilt Squares

Campers in the fourth and fifth grade camp will test various dyes and materials on blocks of fabric to observe the different chemical properties of each combination. Post-camp, the squares will be sewn into a quilt. This activity will be related to the children’s book “The Patchwork Quilt” by Valerie Flournoy.

Get Building Activity

Campers in the first, second, and third grade camp will design and build enclosures for a Tonka dump truck to “sleep” inside. This activity will go along with the book Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site by Sherri Duskey Rinker.

Cookie Mining

First, second, and third grade campers will hear the story “If you Give a Mouse a Cookie,” by Laura Joffe Numeroff. Then they will have cookie models that they will mine in different ways to look for chocolate chips. They will learn about mining engineering through this activity.
