Statler College to host second annual derby races during Engineer's Week 2024

Students, faculty and staff of the Benjamin M. Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources will have the chance to race toward victory during this year's Engineers Week derby competitions, sponsored by West Virginia University's Lane Innovation Hub and Scouts BSA.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.—

WHAT: Engineers Week 2024 Competitions

Pinewood Derby: Statler's 2nd annual Pinewood Derby race is back! Sponsored by the Scouts BSA, this event encourages participants to be creative in constructing unpowered, unmanned miniature cars from the kit containing a pine block, axles and plastic wheels.

CO2 Dragster Race: Sponsored by the WVU Lane Innovation Hub, participants will use supplied kits of a wood block, axle and wheels, competitors will use their engineering and manufacturing knowledge construct a mini-CO2 dragster car. CO2 cartridges will be handed out just before the event. Cars will be raced down a straight track in an elimination event, with winners moving on to compete until the final car.

CO2 Dragster: ESB G85 Lane Innovation Hub

Pinewood Derby: ESB G114 - Atrium

WHEN: 

CO2 Dragster Race (Tuesday, Feb. 20) from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m.

Pinewood Derby (Friday, Feb. 23) at 2 p.m.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: 

Mountaineer Area Council Pack 64 from Scouts BSA donated the track and software for the Pinewood Derby and will be onsite to operate and collect data on participants. Awards will be given for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in both individual and team entries immediately following each race. Overall awards for Most Creative, Most School Spirit and Best Engineered will also be given. Event information can be found on the Engineers Week website.
