“I’m deeply honored to be named an ECS Fellow,” stated Liu, professor in the Department of Mechanical, Materials and Aerospace Engineering. “This recognition, by such a distinguished community, is both humbling and inspiring. I share this honor with my students, colleagues, and collaborators whose dedication and insight have made this journey possible. I look forward to continuing our work advancing electrochemical science and engineering together.”
Liu’s significant achievements in electrochemical science and engineering have expanded the possibilities of scalable and cost-effective hydrogen production and utilization. His work focuses on high-temperature materials, including solid oxide electrochemical cells, high-temperature alloys and protective coatings.
In 2011, Liu received the R&D 100 Award for his development of solid oxide fuel cell coatings. Liu was recognized by the U.S. Department of Energy with the Hydrogen Production Technology Award in 2023 for his contributions to developing durable and efficient solid oxide electrolysis cells. These cells enable hydrogen production at reduced temperatures, making the process more energy efficient. Liu’s project demonstrated the ability to maintain 5,000 hours of high-performance, stable operation.
Liu joined WVU as a postdoctoral researcher in 2000 and became a MMAE faculty member in 2002. He has served as a professor since 2014, and was appointed Statler Endowed Chair of Engineering in 2018. He is also a fellow of ASM International and the American Ceramic Society.
An ECS member since 2010, Liu currently serves as vice chair of the H-TEMP Division. Fellows will be inducted into The Electrochemical Society at this year’s 248th meeting, held in October in Chicago, IL.
