Ryan Gellner, a seniormechanical engineeringstudent atWest Virginia University, has been awarded a 2016-2017 Tau Beta Pi graduate fellowship, which comes in the form of a $10,000 scholarship.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.—

Gellner, a native of Glen Dale, plans to pursue a master’s degree in biomedical engineering at Virginia Tech in the fall, where he will study the effects of concussions on young athletes.

“Winning this fellowship has given me confidence to compete with the top students in the country,” Gellner said. “Being in Tau Beta Pi has given me the opportunity to start a number of charity events within TBP at WVU and I’m hopeful that this culture of service will continue.”

Gellner, who served as vice president of the WVU chapter, was active in organizing the chapter’s inaugural fundraiser in honor of WVU alumnus and late National Academy of Engineering President Charles Vest, who died in 2013 from pancreatic cancer. The bubble soccer tournament raised $800 for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. He is also a member of the WVU Formula SAE team, which will be competing in Michigan in May.

“In addition to his outstanding academic achievement, Ryan Gellner truly possesses exemplary character, an attribute important to Tau Beta Pi,” said Melissa Morris, teaching assistant professor of Fundamentals of Engineering and advisor of the West Virginia Alpha Chapter of Tau Beta Pi at WVU. “I have been extremely proud of Ryan’s contributions and achievements throughout his time at WVU, this fellowship included.”

Tau Beta Pi is the national engineering honor society that represents every field of engineering. To be a member, students must be in the top eighth of their class as a junior or top fifth in their class as a senior and be considered for their overall character. The scholars are deemed to be most deserving among their fellow academically excelling members.
