Gary Winn, professor and coordinator of occupational safety and health at West Virginia University, has received the 2018 William Tarrants Outstanding Safety Educator Award from the American Society of Safety Engineers.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.—

The award, which will be presented at ASSE’s Professional Development Conference and Exposition in June, recognizes educators who show the highest level of achievement in occupational safety and health teaching, scholarship, and professional service as part of ASSE. Winn has been a member of the organization for 25 years.

“I was pleased to learn that I have joined a select group of educators across the country who are shaping the careers of young safety leaders,” said Winn. “However, my real award is when I see another class of WVU’s future safety leaders in caps and gowns preparing to preserve and protect the people, property and business continuity of companies, large and small.”

After earning a doctorate in industrial technology from Ohio State University in 1985, Winn worked as an industrial engineer at Bell Helmets until joining the Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering in 1989.

During his academic career, Winn has published more than 80 peer reviewed research papers and has served as the principle or co-investigator on proposals that have received more than $2.5 million in competitive research funding from the U.S. Department of Labor and Transportation, National Science Foundation and the Benedum Foundation.

Additionally, Winn authored a book in 2016, titled “Practical Leadership Skills for Safety Professionals and Project.”

ASSE is a global professional safety society that is comprised of nearly 37,000 members in more than 80 countries.
