MEDIA ADVISORY: College to host Engineering in Sustainability, Middle School Engineering Challenge Camps

The Statler College will host two Engineering Challenge Camps the week of June 24.

Engineering in Sustainability, a camp for high school students, will activities on topics ranging from gas wells and fracking to windmill design. Twenty-five campers from seven states will be in attendance.

For middle school students, Engineering the Grand Challenges will immerse campers in activities related to the National Academy of Engineering’s Grand Challenges. Highlights include activities related to infrastructure, cybersecurity and virtual reality. Thirty campers from three states will be attending.

The camps are co-sponsored by EQT and the Statler College and are sponsored in part by Halliburton, Eaton, Chevron and Northeast Natural Energy.

HIGHLIGHTED ACTIVITIES: Engineering in Sustainability

Monday, June 25; 3-4 p.m., Mineral Resources Atrium/Courtyard

Campers will design and build worm buckets that will be used to speed the composting process.

Wednesday, June 27; 1-5 p.m., 205 Mineral Resources Building

Campers will work with members of the Morgantown Municipal Green Team to propose/design solutions to sustainability issues outlined in the organization’s 2018 strategic plan.

Thursday, June 28; 3:30-5 p.m., G114 Engineering Sciences Building (ESB Atrium)

Campers will use recycled materials including tires and bottles to build a piece of furniture that can serve a specific function and be appealing to consumers.

Grand Challenge: Reverse-Engineer the Brain: Brain Hat/Circuit Quiz Boards

Camp counselors will help campers understand the different parts of the brain by building a brain circuit board quiz.

Thursday, June 28; 9:15-noon, 205 Mineral Resources Building

Grand Challenge: Develop Carbon Sequestration Methods: Solar Powered Tractor Pull

Using a battery pack made by campers, counselors will lead students in a competition to design the body, tires and transmission of a tractor
