WVU engineering professor receives accolade for contributions to transportation industry in West Virginia

For over two decades,John Zaniewski’s research has focused on the needs of West Virginia, specifically towards improving the techniques and technology to create better road conditions in the state.

As the asphalt technology professor in the Wadsworth Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at West Virginia University, Zaniewski has assisted in the development of many asphalt standards that are used in practice throughout the state and country.

In acknowledgement of his contributions to the transportation industry in West Virginia, Zaniewski has been named the 2019 American Society of Highway Engineers of North Central West Virginia Honoree of the Year.

To receive one of the top awards in the state of W.Va. for work in transportation, nominees must exhibit exemplary experience in the transportation industry, significant impacts made throughout the state, involvement in professional engineering societies and research performed focusing in highways and transportation.

“The condition of pavements in West Virginia is a major issue to the public,” Zaniewski said.

His research efforts have assisted the West Virginia Division of Highways and the paving industry to construct and maintain pavements in a more cost-effective manner.

“We could not be more honored to have such a respectable contributor to the transportation industry throughout the state of West Virginia,” said Brandon LeRoy, ASHE NCWV section president.

Zaniewski’s current research project aims to help the West Virginia DOH improve the method for ensuring asphalt mixes have adequate skid resistance to reduce the potential for wet weather accidents.

“As one ponders retirement it is natural to think back on one’s career and wonder if a positive contribution has resulted from their work,” Zaniewski said. “This award is an affirmation that the professional highway of engineers recognize that I’ve made a positive difference. I have admired the contributions of previous winners of the award and I’m humbled that I have been selected to share the honor of being associated with the winners of this award.”

Throughout his career, Zaniewski has released over 80 publications and textbooks regarding pavement design and materials.
