Matthew Valenti, professor and interim chair of the Lane Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering in the Benjamin M. Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources at West Virginia University, has been selected as the Raymond J. Lane Chair of the Department, effective July 1, 2020.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.—

Valenti began his career as a faculty member in the Lane Department in 1999 after receiving his doctorate in electrical engineering from Virginia Tech earlier that year. As an internationally recognized leader in the field of wireless communications, he is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical Engineers (IEEE) and has been awarded the IEEE Military Communications Conference Award for Sustained Technical Achievement.

Since 2014, he has served as the director of WVU’s site in the multi-university National Science Foundation Center for Identification Technology Research (CITeR). He is the recipient of multiple teaching awards including the 2013 WVU Foundation Outstanding Teaching Award and is registered as a professional engineer in the state of West Virginia.

Valenti’s service to the University includes chairing the WVU Faculty Senate during the 2017-2018 academic year, serving on the WVU Board of Governors from 2017 through 2019, and he has chaired curriculum committees at all levels of the University.

“It is an honor to have the opportunity to lead the Lane Department,” Valenti said. “I look forward to working with our faculty, staff, students, alumni, and industry partners towards the goals of engaging in world-class research and delivering a quality curriculum that adapts to continually changing needs.”

He succeeds Brian Woerner, who served as department chair for 15 years, and who will continue to serve as a member of the Department’s faculty.

“Matt is a world-renowned engineer and he has already provided exceptional service to the University,” said Earl Scime, interim dean of the Statler College. “I am very pleased that he will be serving as chair of the Lane Department.”
