WVU NSBE President Mazin Omer has been recognized as this year's Mike Shinn Distinguished Member of the Year by the National Society of Black Engineers.

When Mazin Omer first stepped onto Evansdale campus, he brought with him a passion for aerospace and mechanical engineering and an incredible drive to serve his community. Now, Omer’s devotion has earned him recognition from National Society of Black Engineers as the  Mike Shinn Distinguished Member of the Year 2024-2025 — a distinction reserved for students who demonstrate exceptional leadership, academic excellence and commitment to their profession.

“This is an indescribable honor,” Omer said. “I’m incredibly humbled and grateful to be recognized nationally by an organization that has played such a pivotal role in my growth. As an international student from Sudan who came to the U.S. alone at 16, this moment validates years of hard work, perseverance and purpose. It’s more than just a personal achievement, it’s a tribute to my family, my country and the community that has supported me throughout this journey.”

Despite the significant impact that ongoing conflict in Sudan has had on Omer and his friends and family, Omer has achieved a great deal academically and professionally, maintaining a 4.0 GPA and tirelessly dedicating himself to the community here at the Benjamin M. Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources. As president of the NSBE chapter at West Virginia University, Omer has worked to improve long-term leadership continuity, increased chapter membership and secured $29,000 in funding and sponsorships.

“NSBE has been foundational in shaping both my academic and professional journey. Seeing students grow into confident, engaged leaders through NSBE and knowing that we built something sustainable that will outlast our time here is incredibly rewarding,” Omer said.

“Through leadership roles, national conferences and mentorship, I’ve learned to think beyond technical skills and embrace service, advocacy and representation in STEM. It’s deepened my passion for aerospace and mechanical engineering and inspired me to use my career not just to innovate, but to uplift others — especially students from underrepresented communities.”

Under Omer’s leadership, WVU’s NSBE chapter was recognized by the Statler College, earning the 2024 Excellence in Cultivating Engagement and Belonging Award. Omer is passionate about enhancing inclusivity and representation in STEM fields. He actively mentors young students from underserved communities and encourages them to pursue careers in engineering. His advice? Let heart and courage take the lead.

“Start with purpose, stay consistent, and don’t be afraid to lead,” Omer said. “You don’t need to have it all figured out, what matters most is showing up with heart, humility and a willingness to serve others. Lean into your strengths, ask for help when needed and always focus on impact over recognition. The relationships you build and the lives you touch along the way will become the most valuable part of the experience.”
