Research

Engineers get closer to commercializing microwave technology that can cool down industry's energy usage while heating up the market for ethylene jobs

A team of engineers has secured $3 million in U.S. Department of Energy funding for research into a new chemical reactor system that uses microwaves to reduce industrial heat and carbon emissions. 

Mechanical engineer and researcher discovers how to predict movement for animals of all shapes, sizes and speeds

A mechanical engineer has developed a way to predict the neuron and muscle patterns controlling locomotion for animals of any size, moving at any speed. 

IAC team utilizes Dept. of Energy funding to spur clean energy job education, access in rural WV communities

A team at the Industrial Assessment Center at the Department of Industrial Management Systems Engineering received $450,000 as a part of the funding from the U.S. Department of Energy to BridgeValley Community and Technical College in Charleston. The funding, which totals $3 million over three years, will go toward the development of an industrial assessment center at BCTC. 

Statler College to establish innovative cybersecurity education, training facility

With the ongoing threat of cyberattacks becoming more sophisticated, WVU is launching plans for a cybersecurity range — a specialized software and hardware facility for education, training and research — with $750,000 in grant funding support from the United States Department of Education. 

Creating a new future

WVU unveils undergraduate degree program in robotics

Students in the Statler College will now have a chance to pursue a degree in one of the top ten fastest growing professions globally: robotics.

Spotlight on Aviation fuel efficiency and emissions

Emissions from air travel are a significant contributor to a warming planet, and yet advancements in carbon-free flights are still decades away. With a newly patented process, researchers in the Statler College are working with GE Aerospace to utilize nanoparticles to improve fuel cell efficiency and lower carbon emissions.

Statler College is dedicated to introducing K-12 students to the variety of possibilities and opportunities of science, technology, engineering and math.


Creativity brings Lane Innovation Hub to life


Lane Innovation Hub makerspace manager Michael Loop has always had an interdisciplinary mindset. After joining the Hub, Loop utilized his extensive background in creative arts to bring in expertise from across the WVU campus.

Like most rising seniors, Moriah Frazier began searching for the perfect capstone thesis project as she approached her final year at the University. But this cybersecurity major found that this fairly new cybersecurity program didn’t yet have many established capstone projects for her to choose from.

Farhang-Doost, gave an award-winning oral presentation at the 50th Annual SciX meeting

Biomedical engineering doctoral student Negar Farhang-Doost, gave an award-winning oral presentation at the 50th Annual SciX meeting held in Sparks, Nevada. The presentation, entitled "Candida auris infection detection by dielectrophoresis,” received the AES (American Electrophoresis Society) Blue Fingers Student Award.

Mechanical, Materials and Aerospace Engineering associate professor and associate chair for research,  Konstantinos Sierros has been elected to the rank of fellow by the Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining (IOM3) in recognition of his research on promising new applications of novel materials for additive manufacturing.

Amy McBrayer, mining engineering teaching assistant professor at the  Statler College has been named the 2023 Michael Karmis PhD Fellow by the Society of Mining Professors.
