Several mining engineering students and a professor from West Virginia University were recognized at the Pittsburgh Coal Mining Institute of America/Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration’s annual meeting.

Two long-time supporters of West Virginia University have found yet another way to honor the institution that has given so much to them, while surprising one of its deans in the process.

Aaron Noble, assistant professor of mining engineering at West Virginia University, has been named a Henry Krumb Lecturer for 2016-17 by the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration. Noble was one of only 10 selected for the honor from the more than 750 professionals who presented technical papers at the SME Annual Conference and Expo.

Pollinators play a significant role in the production of more than 150 food crops in the United States with almost all fruit and grain crops requiring pollination to produce their crop. Pollinators come in all shapes and sizes and if a research team from West Virginia University has its way, they may also one day come in the form of a robot.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory recently awarded West Virginia University a project to survey acid mine drainage solids to identify the concentration and amount of rare earth elements available in AMD solids.
