In the summer of 2022, Amirah Mitchell started working on developing an artificial intelligence program that would understand human emotion, using deep learning approach. This was after she was given the opportunity to be a part of WVU’s Summer Undergraduate Research Experience. The biomedical engineering undergraduate researcher used the opportunity to start her project on how the technology could predict the emotional state of humans, whether happy, sad, angry, etc.

Recognized for their exemplary academic achievement and extracurricular involvement, Matthew Hudson, Giana Loretta, Sonia-Frida Ndifon, Trevor Swiger and Callyn Zeigler have been named the  West Virginia University 2022 Mountaineers of Distinction, a  Mountaineer Week tradition.

At the West Virginia University Benjamin M. Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources, a group of engineers is betting on the combined promise of two paths to carbon-neutral power: hydrogen and biomass.

On October 27, members from the Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources at West Virginia University gathered to celebrate the exchange of personal experiences, values, and beliefs at All Voices as ONE: Together We Can Innovate and Shape the Future, the first student led diversity conference hosted by the College. 

Pedro Mago, Glen H. Hiner Dean of the Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources at West Virginia University, and the Statler College Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee, announced the recipients of the College’s Excellence in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Award. The awards were distributed to the recipients in conjunction with WVU’s annual Diversity Week celebration. 

With the transition to centralized student advising in the Benjamin M. Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources complete, students are able to access primary-role academic advisors 12 months out of the year from the Statler College Advising Center so the College can continue to support student success.

A strong educational background in engineering from West Virginia University and Oregon State University has served as the foundation for Adam Al-Mulla’s work as Kuwait’s permanent delegate in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) since his appointment in February 2019. During his four-year term, Al-Mulla will be stationed in Paris, according to an article published at Oregon State University.

After years of use, mattresses and the wood, metal and textiles that compose them are eventually discarded into landfills, creating methane gases while their chemicals and dyes seep into soil and groundwater. 

This summer, school students in grades K-12 from across West Virginia may discover their passions in STEM at  West Virginia University by attending one of the  Benjamin M. Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources Engineering Challenge Camps.
