The Science, Technology & Research division of the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission awarded three research challenge grants worth approximately $1.3 million each to support research conducted by students and faculty at West Virginia High education institutions. All three research teams selected for the grants totaling more than $3.9 million will be led by faculty from the Benjamin M. Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources at West Virginia University.

The launch of a partnership between West Virginia University engineers and the nonprofit and utility sectors could bring the region one step closer to integrating solar-generated power into the electrical grid.

In the summer of 2022, Amirah Mitchell started working on developing an artificial intelligence program that would understand human emotion, using deep learning approach. This was after she was given the opportunity to be a part of WVU’s Summer Undergraduate Research Experience. The biomedical engineering undergraduate researcher used the opportunity to start her project on how the technology could predict the emotional state of humans, whether happy, sad, angry, etc.

According to data from Lightcast*, there are more than 625,000 open software engineering jobs that require a master's degree in the United States alone. The Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources at West Virginia University has partnered with Coursera to offer an online master’s degree program in software engineering to give students and professionals the skills and credentials needed to fill these vacancies.

Recognized for their exemplary academic achievement and extracurricular involvement, Matthew Hudson, Giana Loretta, Sonia-Frida Ndifon, Trevor Swiger and Callyn Zeigler have been named the  West Virginia University 2022 Mountaineers of Distinction, a  Mountaineer Week tradition.

Nate's Nets, which began as a passion project between a father and son, has now bloomed into a full-fledged entrepreneurial endeavor thanks to a dedicated student from the Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources.  

On October 27, members from the Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources at West Virginia University gathered to celebrate the exchange of personal experiences, values, and beliefs at All Voices as ONE: Together We Can Innovate and Shape the Future, the first student led diversity conference hosted by the College. 

Electric fish and robots may hold the key to achieving “autonomous lifelong machine learning,” based on research conducted at West Virginia University with the aid of a $2 million National Science Foundation grant.
