NSF award to fund engineering scholarships for underrepresented groups at WVU

The demand for qualified professionals in science, technology, engineering and mathematics is high, but the supply of STEM workers to fill these positions is at risk, especially if underrepresented groups are not engaged in these fields. According to the National Action Council for Minorities in Education, underrepresented groups earned only 12.5 percent of all STEM degrees in 2011.

Researchers to study fundamental causes of roof falls in mines

In 2015, the United States generated about four trillion kilowatt hours of electricity, with 33 percent coming from the use of coal. While coal mining as an industry is important not only in the U.S. but abroad, it remains a challenging one, with roof falls accounting for more than 450 injuries over the past three years.
