In a major step towards preparing students to succeed in the global market, the Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources and the School of Chemical Engineering and Technology at the China University of Mining and Technology are teaming up to create a 3+1+1 academic program that will allow eligible students from CUMT to study at West Virginia University.

The West Virginia University mine rescue team took home its second straight first place finish in the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration—2019 Eastern Collegiate Mine Rescue National Competition.

Today, hundreds of pumpkins plummeted 11-stories from atop West Virginia University’s Engineering Sciences Building at the 32nd annual Pumpkin Drop. It was team 153 from Doddridge Middle School in West Union that went home with the top honors. Their pumpkin landed just one foot and two inches from the target, earning them the $100 first prize.

Affected chemical materials were removed from the Engineering Research Building Tuesday (Oct. 22) and normal operations resumed Thursday (Oct. 23) in the building. Students, faculty and staff in the ERB were sent home for the day (Tuesday, Oct. 22) as a precaution after a chemical accident inside one of the laboratories.

Learn by doing. That phrase is deeply engrained in 4-H’ers all over the country. A group of 4-H’ers from Ohio County recently had a chance to put that motto to the test.

The Department of Mining and Industrial Extension at West Virginia University will host several teams of students from WVU, Virginia Tech, Penn State University and the University of Kentucky, in the 2019 Fall Eastern Collegiate National Mine Rescue Contest.
